Borderlands

September 27 to October 28, 2010

Borderlands showcases works by artists of color inspired by the literature produced by feminists of color. The exhibition examines how visual artists explore the intersections between gender, race, sexuality, class, nationality and other forms of social membership and the “borderland” spaces between them. Borderland artists have developed unique visual languages as well as creative strategies to manifest the complexity of their identities, exhibiting works that, paraphrasing Gloria Anzaldúa, have been conceived as “forms of cultural activism employing definite aesthetic strategies for resisting dominant cultural norms”. Featured artists include Patricia Vazquez (lead curator), Cecilia Alvarez, Veronica Barrera, Nichole Hart, Leticia Nieto, Onion, and Luyi Xu.
